Turkey to support Pakistan for UN Security Council seat
Turkish leader thanks Pakistan for support over Gaza flotilla raid issue
ISTANBUL: Turkey will support Pakistan’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat of the UN Security Council, Turkish President Abdullah Gul said during a meeting with Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi on Wednesday.
The Turkish leader also offered support for the next Friends of Democratic Pakistan (FoDP) ministerial meeting that is going to be held in Brussels in October this year.
During the meeting, Gul said that Turkish businessmen were investing in the energy sector in Pakistan, and expressed satisfaction over the growing economic cooperation between the two countries.
The Turkish president also thanked the Pakistani leadership for the warm welcome extended to him during his recent visit to Pakistan, saying he was met with affection and enthusiasm everywhere.
Gul also appreciated the level of support that the government and people of Pakistan provided to Turkey during the Gaza flotilla crisis.
The Turkish president also fully acknowledged the support provided by Pakistan for the Turkish initiative to defuse tension over Iran’s nuclear issue that resulted in the May 17 nuclear fuel exchange deal.
Speaking on the occasion, Foreign Minister Qureshi expressed the hope that the agreement would pave the way for a negotiated resolution of the controversy surrounding Iran’s nuclear programme.
He said that Pakistan had always advocated for a peaceful resolution of Iran’s nuclear issue by recognising Iran’s right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes while adhering to its international obligations.
Qureshi once again expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives during the Israeli raid on the Peace Flotilla.
He informed the Turkish president that both the houses of the Pakistani parliament had condemned the raids through a unanimous resolution.
The minister also congratulated the Turkish president on assuming the chairmanship of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA). app
