The outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) sent out an e-mail to local media calling for the boycott and a 15-hour general strike on August 15.
"Some organizations like ULFA have given a boycott call. So, in view of all the inputs we have received so far, we have made some fool-proof plans so that nothing goes wrong during the celebrations," said P C Saloi, Senior Superintendent of Police, Guwahati.
Meanwhile, security has also been stepped up in West Bengal following the recurrent strikes and shutdown calls by Maoists in the region.
Bhupinder Singh, Director General of West Bengal Police on Thursday held a meeting with the state police officials and other intelligence officials to assess the situation in the region.
Singh said measures were in place to ensure peaceful celebrations on the Independence Day.
The Northeast Frontier Railway announced cancellation of all night trains through Assam from Saturday evening until August 17, citing security reasons.
"The cancellation of night trains in Assam follows intelligence inputs of militant groups planning to blow up rail tracks or passenger trains as a show of strength ahead of August 15," a senior Assam Police official said.
These groups are active in Assam, Manipur and Tripura. As part of their boycott call August 15, the militant groups have called for a general strike from 1.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. on Sunday.
Militant groups in the northeast have for years boycotted national events to protest New Delhi's rule over the region.
Meanwhile, security forces have been put on maximum alert across the region to thwart possible rebel strikes.
"The Border Security Force (BSF) has been put on maximum alert across the Bangladesh border. Additional paramilitary troopers and state security personnel have been deployed in sensitive and important locations to thwart possible strikes by extremists," a BSF spokesman told the news agency.
Paramilitary personnel, accompanied by bomb disposal quads and dog squads, launched search operations at airports, hotels, bus terminals, major markets and national highways, Tripura police spokesman Nepal Das said.
The United Liberation Front of Asom is a separatist group from Assam, among many other such groups in North-East India. It seeks to establish a sovereign Assam via an armed struggle in the Assam Conflict.
