United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and five other rebel groups called for boycotting the Independence Day in India’s north eastern region.

ULFA decleared a 15-hour general strike from 1.30 am to 5.30 pm to boycott Independence Day celebrations in Assam on August 15.

By sending e-mail to media, the outfit’s central publicity committee member Anu Buragohain said, “Security forces have created a ‘war like situation in the state’ and we appeal to the people of our region to boycott India's Independence Day celebration, as a mark of solidarity against Indian colonial occupation and military repression.”
Apart from ULFA, the other outfits, who will also boycott the Independence Day, include - National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), Kamatapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), Manipur People's Liberation Front (MPLF) and Tripura People's Democratic Front (TPDF).
Security have been stepped up and the state has been put on high alert this announcement by ULFA.

The United Liberation Front of Asom is a separatist group from Assam, among many other such groups in North-East India. It seeks to establish a sovereign Assam via an armed struggle in the Assam Conflict.
